ok, it takes about 15 minutes to turn off or turn on a hydroelectric powerstation. It takes a few days to turn on or turn off a coal-burning powerstation. So what do you think they are going to do when the demand suddenly drops at 8:30? Turn them off, or just keep them running and disconnect them, then bring them back when power spikes back up at 9:30pm? And how much carbon will that save? If the answer is "almost none", then you are right.
If this were Tasmania, where we use hydro-power not coal-power, Earth Hour would make a difference. In Sydney, all it will really do is make people feel good about themselves without making any real difference.
